Day 8: 2 Timothy 2:8-13
What is Paul’s gospel according to verse 8? What do you find interesting about that gospel summary?
Why is Jesus so great according to this trustworthy saying?
‘The Elect’
Paul references a group of people called ‘the elect’ in verse 10. According to verse 10, these are the people who will obtain salvation. This is the idea that God, in His sovereignty, chooses people to become Christians. He ‘elects’ them. This idea is closely tied to predestination.
This idea can be a little uncomfortable to think through. But while it can be tricky, we must remember that we trust an all-powerful and all loving God. Keep coming back to that as you think through it. (This idea of the elect/predestination comes up often in the Bible, see Eph 1:4-5, Eph 1:11 or Rom 8:28-30 for more. For a good introduction a look at the book “Predestination” (Matthias Little Black Book Series).
Why is Paul willing to ‘endure everything’?
Do you share that radical mindset? Why/Why not?
Today’s Prayer Suggestion:
Thank God that He is sovereign, in complete control. Thank Him for the comfort that comes from that knowledge. Ask Him to give you the same radical mindset Paul has for the lost.
Pray for our Mission Partners (especially the Osbornes) that they’d endure for the sake of God’s elect.
